Our Hair
Types of Natural Hair
Virgin, Remy, and non-Remy hair are all 100% human hair, but they are far from the same.
•Virgin hair is 100% pure human hair, untouched by chemicals or dyes, with its cuticle scales aligned in one direction and intact. It remains raw and unprocessed.
•Remy hair Human ponytail hair has its cuticle aligned in one direction, though it can be dyed or treated.
•100% human hair is any hair from a human scalp — meaning it can come from the floor of a hair salon, a brush, or even a corpse. Its cuticles do not align in the same direction.
And now you've fully realized why learning the difference between the three is crucial, however, treatments aren't the only factor to consider. We need to look at the manufacturing processes that differentiate cheaper wigs or extensions from premium ones.

Virgin Human Hair
Untouched by harmful chemicals or dyes, raw unprocessed human hair is a product in high demand in today's market.
While traditionally associated with regions like Russia and Brazil, the landscape has shifted dramatically in recent years. Terms like "Russian" or "Brazilian" hair often serve as marketing tactics rather than indicators of true origin. China has emerged as a major player in the global hair industry, prioritizing mass production over premium quality. In many cases, the hair sourced from India is not virgin but rather collected from numerous donors, reflecting a focus on quantity rather than purity, to streamline the production, the hair undergoes chemical processing in huge acid baths to strip away the cuticles.
These Chinese products cater to customers seeking affordability over long term quality, with an average lifespan of around six months. For those seeking genuine virgin hair, the most reliable sources are countries like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, where donations from individuals yield truly raw unprocessed hair.

Remy Human Hair
Contrary to popular belief: Remy and virgin hair are not the same.
Remy hair is natural hair that is usually treated. Remy hair wigs and extensions often come with highlights, lowlights, and color treatments to make them ready to wear. But again, just because it's sold as Remy doesn't automatically mean its good quality.
There are two key components to premium Remy hair: origin and manufacturing processes.
Black Diamond works with European hair and sorts hair by type (thick, thin, fine, coarse, curly, straight) and cuticle direction.
Most manufacturers soak all hair in an acid bath to produce as much as possible. Unfortunately, the quality plummets because the cuticles aren't intact, and thus, the direction of the hair isn't consistent.

Non-Remy Hair
While non-Remy hair is 100% human hair, it's much cheaper because it's more readily available.
How do manufacturers get the hair? Unlike Black Diamonds's private collection of natural hair, most manufacturers use a mixture of hair from China, Myanmar and India. To streamline the production, the hair undergoes chemical processing in huge acid baths to strip away the cuticles.
When non-Remy hair is collected from the floor, it may exhibit various textures. To address this in lower-quality wigs, the hair is often permed. Whether straight or curly, all types of hair undergo aggressive processing.
As a consequence, the outcome is a "universal" product. However, this approach fails to consider the diversity of our individual hair types, resulting in significantly lower quality. Consequently, the lifespan of the product decreases sharply from five years for raw, unprocessed, or Remy hair to just six months when heavily processed.
